The 3716 is a 2-8-0 Consolidation
type steam locomotive. It was built for the
CPR in October of 1912 at the Montreal Locomotive Works in
Montreal, Quebec, Canada. There were 49 Consolidations in the N2b class,
ranging from #3691 to 3740. Between 1901 and 1921 there were a total of 596
Consolidations in the "M" and "N" classes on the CPR's roster.
The 3716 is used
as a backup while the Royal Hudson 2860 undergoes
maintenance or repairs. The 3716 is the only operating Consolidation locomotive
from the CPR's roster. It was originally built with a coal-fired boiler, but
now uses bunker C fuel oil.

For the first dozen years of the century, the Consolidation
was the Canadian Pacific Railway's standard heavy freight locomotive. It was especially suited
for mountain regions where tractive effort was more important than speed. These were eventually
replaced by the 2-8-2 Mikados. The addition of a trailing truck allowed a larger boiler and firebox to
be used. The increased steam produced higher speeds than the Consolidation.
