A typical steam locomotive, such as the Royal Hudson, had a 4 wheel lead truck to support the front end and guide it around curves, could have between 4 and 8 drivers (powered wheels), and a 2 or 4 wheel trailing truck for support. For better adhesion to the rails, freight locomotives were built to place more weight on the drivers, and had a 2 wheel lead truck and a 2 wheel trailing truck.
