The
Hudson type was a "4-6-4", referring to the wheel
arrangement. It had 4 leading wheels, 6 drivers, and 4
trailing wheels. For an explanation of wheel arrangements,
view the wheel
arrangement
chart. Locomotives of the 4-6-4 wheel arrangement were
pioneered in North America by the New York Central, and
named after it's Hudson River line. This wheel arrangement
allowed a larger boiler to be used, which increased the
heating surface and consequently, the steam pressure. The
2860's boiler was (and still is) oil fired, using Bunker C
fuel oil.
